Performance monitor or sport layout missing or showing no values
Applies to: MIB2 Standard (MST2) units, Technisat and Delphi; MIB2 Discover Media and Discover Pro; MHI2 units; Audi MH2P units (RS Monitor); Audi virtual cockpit (FPK) sport layout on A3 8V, A4/A5 B9, TT 8S and similar; VW, Skoda, SEAT and Cupra MQB cars; PQ-platform cars have limited or no support
This problem has two forms. Either the Performance Monitor (Sport HMI, sport monitor) never appears in the head unit's car menu, or it appears but some gauges stay at zero, show a dash or show the wrong value. A related problem affects the Audi virtual cockpit sport layout and the RS Monitor, which are set up differently. Owners report that most cases come from three causes: a missing feature (FEC) code, adaptations in module 5F that were never activated, or a car whose engine ECU, gateway, cluster or ABS unit does not send the data the monitor needs.
How to recognise the problem
Check which of these symptoms matches your car. Each one points to a different cause.
Gauges that read zero are usually a data problem, not a head unit problem. Patching, FEC codes and adaptations cannot create data the car does not send.
- Performance Monitor or Sport menu does not appear in the car menu at all, even after patching.
- The FEC is entered but shows as invalid or disabled in the FEC list.
- The menu appears but only oil or coolant temperature and G-force work. Boost, power (kW) or torque read 0, a dash, or the bar does not move.
- On some older firmware, all three gauges show the G-meter.
- On PQ cars the menu can be made to appear, but it shows only temperature.
- On Audi virtual cockpits the sport layout coding is accepted but the cockpit does not change, the tool returns a coding error, or the rev scale is wrong.
Likely causes
The Performance Monitor on MIB2 head units needs a feature code. Owners widely cite 00060400 as the Sport HMI / Performance Monitor FEC. An SD-card patch on its own does not add it. One report says mibtool adds it automatically only when it detects a supported car. Other patches leave it out entirely and it must be added by hand.
Even with the FEC present, the menu can stay hidden until the SportHMI adaptations in module 5F (car menu adaptation) are activated.
For gauges that read zero, owners point to the control units that supply the data. These include the engine ECU (01), gateway (19), instrument cluster (17), and the ABS unit for the G-meter. Several reports say 2014 - 2015 cars need newer ECU and gateway software. One report puts the minimum at 2016 model-year software. Diesel engines generally do not supply boost data. One report adds that oil temperature is not sent on the comfort CAN bus on some cars.
PQ-platform cars are reported not to support the function. On PQ, the FEC codes 60400 and 60100 have been reported as invalid while other codes are accepted. One owner disputes the broader claim, so treat PQ support as very limited at best.
On Audi cars, the sport layout is a virtual cockpit (module 17) setting, not a head unit setting. Running scripts on the MIB head unit will not enable it.
Before changing anything
Several fixes below involve patching the head unit, adding FEC codes, changing coding or adaptations, or flashing control unit software. Take these precautions first. Do not flash any file unless it is confirmed for your exact part number and train.
- Note the current firmware train and the part number of the head unit and of any module you plan to change.
- Back up the coding, adaptations and FEC list of every module you plan to touch.
- Connect a battery charger or stable power supply. Owners link fault codes that keep returning after coding to a weak battery.
Fix: Performance Monitor menu missing on a MIB2 head unit
The steps below are the sequence most often reported to work on MST2 and other MIB2 units.
Not every case was solved. One MST2 unit on MST2_EU_SE_ZR_P0479T still showed the feature as disabled after the FEC was entered, and one Golf 7 GTE (MHI2) unit reported the code turning invalid after a reboot. Neither case had a confirmed fix.
- Confirm the car is MQB-based (ZR trains on MST2 units). PQ cars are reported not to deliver working values.
- Make sure the unit is on firmware that a patch supports and is patched to accept FEC codes. Owners report success on trains such as MST2_EU_VW_ZR_P0478T and MST2_EU_VW_PQ_P0478T.
- Add FEC 00060400 with OBDeleven, VCP or ODIS. In ODIS-E, use the same method as VCP but switch the session to EOL. VCDS cannot add FEC codes. Coding only the 5F adaptations in VCDS changes nothing if the FEC is missing.
- On an MHI2 unit, one report recommends 00060400 rather than 00060800 for Sport HMI.
- If the new code stays invalid, check for illegal or no-permission FEC entries still in the list. One suggested method writes FFFFFFFD via OBDeleven to remove the illegal entry, then adds 00060400 and completes the basic settings.
- In module 5F, open car menu adaptation (Car_Function_Adaptations_Gen2). Set menu_SportHMI and menu_SportHMI_over_threshold_high to activated.
- Restart module 5F and the head unit. Some owners report the menu appears a few seconds to about five minutes after restart while the license is validated.
- If the FEC list was rewritten during other coding work, restore the FECs afterwards.
Fix: Sport menu disappears when Off Road is enabled
Owners do not agree here. Some report that with the Off Road (compass) display active, the Sport menu only appears once Off Road is turned off. They attribute this to the 6.5-inch screen being too small to show both. Others say both can run together if all FEC codes are correct and both sets of 5F adaptations are active.
If you only need the Off Road screen, one report says it needs coding only, with no FEC. In 5F, after security access 20103, set Car_Function_Adaptations_Gen2 menu_display_compass and Car_Function_list_BAP_Gen2 compass_0x15 to Active. One owner reported this did not work on their car even after a reset.
Fix: menu present but gauges read zero or a dash
Work through the data sources. Results vary a lot between cars, and some cars never gain boost or power readings.
- Boost, power or kW reading 0 on 2014 - 2015 cars: update the engine ECU software, and possibly the gateway and cluster, with ODIS or VCP using the correct dataset. Check the part number for available updates first. One SEAT Leon owner confirmed this restored boost and temperature readings.
- Oil or water temperature missing after a MIB1-to-MIB2 retrofit or a cluster swap: the cluster must support the MIB2 message set. An older cluster may not supply the data. One report on a 2013/2014 Golf 7 suggests a cluster software update from 5G0906259 to 5G0906259C, checking that the engine code matches first.
- G-meter not working: the ABS unit must send G-meter data on CAN and be coded correctly.
- On one MST2 unit on MST2_EU_VW_ZR_P0254T, all three gauges showed the G-meter. Moving to newer firmware (P0480T was reported) was suggested. The power/kW gauge may still not appear.
- Diesel engines generally do not supply boost data. Petrol engines are reported to work.
- Some owners say the gateway and cluster matter more than the BCM for a kW gauge that does not move.
Audi RS Monitor on MH2P
One suggestion is to set 5F long coding byte 02 as follows: bit 4 off, bit 5 on, bit 6 on and bit 7 off. Then reboot or let the unit sleep, and the RS Monitor should appear under CAR. This is disputed. Another owner reports that byte 2 only changes the car image in the menu and did not bring up the RS Monitor. The car image in the chassis settings comes from the car supplement setting in 5F long coding.
Audi virtual cockpit sport layout
The sport layout is enabled in the virtual cockpit (module 17), not in the head unit. Owners report using ODIS, VCP, OBDeleven or Car Scanner with an ELM327 adapter. VCDS cannot do it through normal coding. One report mentions sending hex commands through VCDS with HEX-CAN instead.
Boost, power and torque gauges on the sport layout only work if the car sends that data. On diesel cars and some A4 B9 and TT models, owners report these gauges only work with an add-on rainbow module.
- Coding-not-supported or error messages in Car Scanner are usually traced to cheap ELM327 clones. Owners report better results with Vgate iCar Pro, Carista or Veepeak adapters, and on one occasion reinstalling the app helped.
- Firmware: on the A3, owners report any cockpit version from 0069 upwards works, and 0109 needs no update. One retrofit on 0066 also reportedly works.
- If the change does not show, reboot the cockpit. In OBDeleven, use the module 17 reset with the key-off option, or let the car sleep about 30 minutes. Switching between Sport and Normal once has also helped.
- If the A4 B9 diesel shows an 8000 rpm scale, owners give three different answers: re-run the S layout instead of the RS layout, check that the vehicle variant is set to Derivative_14, or update the cockpit to 0379.
- An Ateca cluster without a letter index does not support the sport view. Check the cluster revision before trying. The entry-level MIB3 virtual cockpit in a 2023 Q3 also lacks the feature.
- If navigation maps display incorrectly in the cockpit after activation, force-reset the MIB unit.
- A later MMI firmware update can overwrite a layout enabled with the older method and leave a mixed layout.
What did not help
The following attempts are reported to have no effect.
- Activating all SportHMI adaptations in VCDS without the FEC.
- Expecting an SD-card patch to add the Performance Monitor by itself.
- Running scripts on the MIB head unit to enable the Audi sport layout.
- Enabling the FEC on PQ cars in the hope of getting live boost and power values.
- Activating only some SportHMI adaptation channels on a SEAT Toledo IV 1.0 TSI, whose turbo bar stayed at 0.
- Updating the virtual cockpit in an attempt to clear fault codes that appeared after sport layout activation. Owners suggest charging the battery and clearing the codes instead.
Frequently asked questions
- Which FEC enables the Performance Monitor on MIB2?
- Owners consistently cite 00060400 for Sport HMI / Performance Monitor. It must be added after the unit is patched, using OBDeleven, VCP or ODIS rather than VCDS.
- Why does the menu appear but boost reads zero?
- The head unit only displays data it receives. Older engine ECU or gateway software, a mismatched cluster or a diesel engine can leave boost and power at zero. Updating the ECU and gateway has worked on some 2014 - 2015 cars.
- Does it work on PQ cars?
- Reports say no in practice. The menu can be shown, but only temperature works, and the FEC may be rejected as invalid.
- Can VCDS enable the Audi sport layout?
- Not through normal coding. Owners use ODIS, VCP, OBDeleven or Car Scanner with a good-quality ELM327 adapter. One report mentions sending hex commands via VCDS with HEX-CAN.
- Can the change be undone?
- Owners report that a sport layout change made in ODIS can be rolled back. On the head unit, deleting the FEC in module 5F removes the Performance Monitor.
