How MIB navigation map updates work (and what to check first)
A map update replaces navigation data rather than the unit's software, so it is usually lower risk than a firmware flash. It is still platform specific and region specific, and the files are large, so a few checks up front save a lot of wasted time.
Maps are platform specific
The Maps folder in the archive is organised by platform: MH2P, MHI2, MIB3H, MST2 and MOI3 for MIB units, plus older systems such as MMI, RNS and RMC, and points-of-interest data. Map data built for one platform will not work on another.
What to check before you download
Confirm your head unit's platform, the region you need, the map version currently installed and the storage your unit uses. Map sets are often several gigabytes, so verify the SHA-256 checksum after downloading to catch corrupted or truncated files.
- Platform matches the folder (see the head-unit identification guide).
- Region matches the area you need.
- Enough free space on the card or unit.
- Checksum matches after download.
Installing the update
Follow the instructions for your platform in the Wiki. Updates are usually applied from a prepared SD card or USB stick. Keep the vehicle power stable and let the unit finish completely before removing the media.
Do I need newer firmware first?
Some map releases expect a minimum firmware level. Check the instructions for your platform before you start so you do not install maps your unit cannot read.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I update the maps on a MIB2 head unit?
- Identify the platform, download the map set built for that platform and region, verify its SHA-256 checksum, and follow the platform instructions to apply it from SD card or USB while power is stable.
- Are map updates risky?
- They are generally lower risk than firmware flashes because they change data, not the unit's software. Wrong or corrupted files simply will not work, but you should still verify the checksum and keep power stable.
- Can I use MIB2 maps on a MIB3 unit?
- No. Map data is built per platform. Use the folder that matches your head unit.
