Features, navigation, radio or FEC codes lost after a MIB firmware update
Applies to: MIB2 / MST2 Technisat and Delphi (VW, Skoda, SEAT); MHI2 / MHI2Q Harman (VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Porsche); MH2P (Audi); MIB3 / MOI3 (VW, Skoda, Audi); Retrofitted cameras and virtual cockpit clusters updated alongside the head unit
A firmware update on a MIB head unit can finish without errors and still leave something missing. Navigation reports invalid data, FEC codes vanish or show as illegal, voice control stops responding, radio logos or POI data disappear, or online licences are gone. The cause is rarely a single fault. FEC signing keys can change between software generations. Patches and adaptations can be overwritten. Speech or region data may not be written. Some builds also introduce regressions of their own. This article explains how to recognise the problem, what usually causes it, and the steps owners report as working. It also says where results were mixed.
How to recognise the problem
The symptoms appear right after a software update, a patch, a region conversion or a module flash. Sometimes they show up a few minutes or days later. Common reports are listed below.
- Navigation will not start, or shows 'Navigation data in system Infotainment is invalid' or 'Navigation file not valid' about a minute after boot.
- On some units, navigation hangs at a percentage or says the function is not supported.
- The FEC list is empty, FECs show as invalid or illegal, or features such as Sport HMI, App Connect, Bluetooth or navigation disappear.
- The voice control button does nothing, the voice assistant shows an error, or navigation has no spoken prompts.
- Radio station logos are replaced by radio text, the DAB tuner stops working, FM fine tuning stops responding, or speed camera and POI data stop working.
- Online licences or menus are missing, for example Audi Connect, satellite maps, online radio, traffic, Travel Assist or auxiliary heater menus.
- Only a few languages remain after a region conversion.
- WLAN is greyed out, the LTE icon is missing, or GPS shows zero satellites.
Which units are affected
Reports cover every MIB generation. On MIB2 Technisat and Delphi units (MST2), issues are tied to specific builds such as P0478T, P0480 and P0883D. Owners report that P0883D blocks POI and speed camera data. On MHI2/MHI2Q, most reports follow larger jumps, such as MHI2_ER_AU57x_S2519 to MHI2_ER_AU57x_K3663_1, MHI2_ER_SEG11_P3315 to MHI2_ER_SEG11_P4709, or moves to MHI2_ER_VWG11_K3342.
On MH2P, licences were lost after moving from MH2P_ER_P2711 to 2873. On MIB3/MOI3, problems follow moves between software generations, such as P1xx to P2xx or x2xx to x3xx, and updates on MOI3_EU_SK_R9410L units. Peripheral modules are affected too. One example is a retrofitted camera moved from 2Q0 980 653 J to 2Q0 980 653 K firmware.
Likely causes
Owner reports point to a handful of recurring causes. More than one can apply at the same time.
- FEC signing keys change between software generations, so existing activations no longer match. Reported cases are the MIB3 Preh move from P1xx to P2xx and the move from 2Q0 980 653 J to 2Q0 980 653 K camera firmware, which uses a longer key.
- A firmware update overwrites previously applied patches, so patch-dependent FECs become invalid.
- Flashing resets coding and adaptations to factory state. One report involves a 5Q0907379K module that was updated without a backup.
- Online-managed data (SVM, licences, activation documents) is not updated with the software. This is reported on MH2P, MIB3 and MOI3 units.
- Speech, TTS or language data is missing or does not match the new software.
- Region settings change. One report describes an AIO package that coded a RoW car as EU, after which the map data became invalid.
- A failed or interrupted flash leaves the RCC and IOC on mismatched versions.
- Some builds contain regressions. Reported examples are P0883D, which drops POI and speed camera data, and virtual cockpit firmware AU_C1_AU736_0378_1280_prod on 8S0906961AK, which shows garbled TPMS text.
- Hardware limits. Some Technisat Bluetooth module revisions lose WLAN on P0478T.
Before attempting any fix
Several fixes involve reflashing, patching or changing coding. Before you start, take the precautions below.
- Note the current software train, the part number and the installed module versions from the engineering menu or a diagnostic tool.
- Back up the coding and adaptations of the head unit and any related module, such as the cluster, camera or 5F. A diagnostic flash log may also record the old coding.
- Keep a stable power supply connected for the whole flash. Do not let the battery voltage drop.
- Use a FAT32-formatted card. Extract any archive before copying it to the card.
Fix: work through these steps in order
Start with the least invasive checks. Only move on to reflashing or online procedures if they fail.
- Let the unit finish booting completely, then restart it. One owner found the sports monitor appeared only after a restart. A hard reset cleared invalid navigation data and a broken App Connect on one MHI2_ER_VWG11_K3342_1 unit. A factory reset was suggested for FM tuning faults.
- Check the FEC list in the engineering menu or with a diagnostic tool. If FECs show invalid after a patched unit was updated, reapply the patch, then delete and reinstall the FECs. On MST2 units flagged with illegal FECs on old software (P0225), owners confirm that updating the firmware first, then patching and installing the FECs, worked. For map updates, the 023000EE FEC must be valid.
- If the software generation changed the FEC keys, the old activation will not come back by retrying. Reported routes are a new navigation activation requested by a dealer, an online SVM, or staying on the older firmware. For the camera, owners kept the 2Q0 980 653 J firmware.
- Compare the coding and adaptations with your backup. Restore them where they were reset, and check that navigation and the relevant options are enabled. On one MHI2 unit, the DVD source disappeared because two coding options were wrong (2D navigation and MMI radio). Correcting them fixed it, and that fix was confirmed.
- For lost voice prompts or voice assistant errors, run the update again in SWDL user-defined mode and reselect the speech items. This was confirmed by one owner. One MHI2_ER_SEG11_P4709 case was fixed by placing the matching speech file in the speech folder and rerunning the update.
- For lost online licences or menus on MH2P, MIB3 and MOI3, perform an online SVM through official diagnostics. On MOI3_EU_SK_R9410L units, a missing Travel Assist menu was attributed to updating directly from 1803. The suggested route was an intermediate 1899 step before the target version.
- If the radio or tuner is silent after a failed flash and the unit is not in emergency mode, check whether the RCC and IOC versions match. Owners suggested bringing both to matching versions over a D-Link connection before installing the intended software.
- If the map data is invalid after an update on a RoW car, check whether the region was changed. Reflashing the matching stock firmware was suggested.
- If a specific build introduced a regression, owners report moving to a different build. One owner confirmed that speed camera alerts returned after going from P0883D back to P0879. Note that downgrading MST2 units is reported to cause problems unless the unit was already on an 08xx build.
Specific symptoms and reported checks
Some symptoms have their own checks, separate from the general steps above.
- GPS shows zero satellites after K3663, even with a new antenna: check the GPS/GNSS adaptation. One suggestion is that the setting may not be mirrored in EEPROM.
- GPS places the car in the wrong country: check the antenna status in 5F live data, then drive so the receiver can acquire a position. One owner confirmed this worked.
- WLAN greyed out on a Technisat unit after P0478T: check the Bluetooth module version. Owners report that UGZZF-1 A1A C300 works, UGZZF-1 A1A C194 should update to C300, and UGZZF-1 01A D408 loses WLAN. These results were not consistent across all units.
- Station logos missing after MST2_EU_VW_ZR_P0468T to MST2_EU_VW_ZR_P0480T: store the favourite stations in memory again.
- Only English and a few languages after an EU conversion: owners report the language set must be reapplied, for example with a corrected language tool followed by a full SWDL.
- Voice button dead on a Technisat unit after P0245 to P0480: check that the voice control FEC is still valid, and wait for a full boot before pressing the button.
- Car image missing or garbled TPMS text after AU_C1_AU736_0378_1280_prod on 8S0906961AK: owners attribute the text to a cluster firmware bug, not the head unit. Unplugging the TPMS module was suggested as a test.
What did not help or remains unresolved
Some reported cases have no confirmed fix, or the fix that was tried did not work.
- Downgrading and remapping did not restore navigation for one owner whose unit lost its database about a week after updating to 480T.
- A downgrade within the AIO package did not fix an A6 C7.5 unit after MHI2_ER_AU57x_K3663_1. LTE-related fixes were suggested but not confirmed.
- Loss of the LTE icon after K3346, and partial LTE loss on an eSIM retrofit after P5092, had no reported solution.
- Rerunning a K3663 AIO after a DAB error is disputed. Some expect DAB to return once the IOC and RCC match again, while others suspect a failed tuner.
- A missing VIM function after MHI2_ER_VWG11_K3342 on a 2xxx-era unit was not resolved by the steps tried.
- On MST2, P0883D is not universally considered faulty, and reports disagree on the best base build.
Frequently asked questions
- Why are my FEC codes invalid after updating?
- The two most common reasons are that the update overwrote a patch the FECs relied on, or that the new software uses different signing keys. In the first case, owners report that reapplying the patch and reinstalling the FECs works. In the second case, a new activation through a dealer or an online SVM is needed.
- Will a factory reset fix lost navigation?
- It sometimes helps. A hard reset fixed invalid navigation data on one MHI2 unit. It will not restore activations or licences that no longer match the new software.
- Navigation has no voice prompts after the update. What should I try first?
- Run the update again in SWDL user-defined mode and reselect the speech items so the unit writes the speech data. This was confirmed by one owner.
- Should I downgrade to get a feature back?
- Only after confirming that the downgrade path is supported for your unit. Owners confirmed that going from P0883D to P0879 restored speed camera alerts. On MST2 units, downgrading is reported to cause problems unless the unit was already on an 08xx build. Always back up coding and adaptations and record the current train first.
- My Audi Connect or other online licence vanished after the update. Can I fix it locally?
- Reports indicate it needs an online SVM through official diagnostics, because the licence data is managed online and does not come back with the firmware alone.
